Through this blog I have explored how illustration shapes the preproduction process in animation showing that it plays a central role in developing and communicating ideas. Illustrators work collaboratively to portray an initial idea into a visual form, through drawing characters, settings, and props. The more modern use of digital tools allows for fast editing and experimentation within this area of work, helping companies to stay on short timescales. Drawing is not just used to create images but to test and refine ideas before the production begins. Ethical and moral considerations also influence how illustrators work in relation to representation and sustainability. Certain decisions made during preproduction can shape how audiences understand characters and stories meaning illustrators have a responsibility to work inclusively.
